Discovering Hohenschwangau Castle

Nestled in the picturesque village of Schwangau, just a stone’s throw from the charming town of Füssen lies the magical Hohenschwangau Castle. Surrounded by the lush greenery of the Bavarian Alps and the sparkling waters of Alpsee, this castle is a gem waiting to be explored. It was the childhood home of the beloved King Ludwig II, who later built the famous Neuschwanstein Castle—yes, the one that inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle!

A Glimpse into History

Hohenschwangau Castle_visit

Perched uphill in the charming village of Schwangau, the story of Hohenschwangau Castle is as enchanting as the castle itself. Let’s dive into its magical past!

Way back in the 12th century, a medieval fortress named Schwanstein stood proudly on this very site. Fast-forward to 1832, when a young and adventurous Crown Prince Maximilian of Bavaria (who would later become King Maximilian II) stumbled upon the ruins of Schwanstein during one of his summer and hunting excursions.

Captivated by the beauty of the location—with the serene Alpsee Lake shimmering nearby and the majestic Alps framing the backdrop—he decided to breathe new life into the old ruins.

Maximilian II commissioned the castle reconstruction in a romantic neo-Gothic style, transforming it into the splendid Hohenschwangau Castle we see today. The name “Hohenschwangau” means “High District of the Swan,” a nod to the area’s rich swan symbolism and the original name, Schwanstein.

The castle became the Bavarian royal family’s beloved summer and hunting residence. Imagine spending your summers in such a dreamy place! The young Prince Ludwig, who would later be known as King Ludwig II, grew up here, surrounded by tales of chivalry and romance depicted on the castle walls.

Two Castles, One Vision

But wait, there’s more magic! Inspired by his idyllic childhood at Hohenschwangau, Ludwig II went on to build the famous Neuschwanstein Castle—the ultimate fairytale castle just a stone’s throw away. Together, these two castles create a landscape straight out of a storybook, each with its own unique charm and history.
